THE HEADLINES: ABC’s RSS feeds had their good days and their bad days – they fared reasonably well on days when there was minimal news on the topic for which the search was conducted (i.e. “Sudan”) and fell well short on days with more extensive coverage on the search term (i.e. “Iraq”). Overall, 10 RSS feeds were used to cull stories from the ABC website: World, World News Tonight, 20/20, Primetime, Nightline, GMA, Politics, US, Business and Front Page. On the slower news days, the RSS feeds pulled up about half of “today’s” stories that could be found through a search for the same term on ABC’s website. That figure dipped to less than 10 percent on the busier days. |
| Other Issues: |
The vast majority of the stories that appeared on the website searches were from other news sources, such as the Associated Press. Likewise, most of the stories that came through the feeds were from the AP. |
There were often many versions of breaking news stories on the website. As the day progressed, new versions of the stories were added. This was not reflected in the feeds, which often contained only the latest version. |
Some stories appeared on the pipes dated the day of the search, but were on the website with the prior day’s date. |
No multimedia came up through the feeds, but there was a small amount of multimedia content that came up on the website search. |
Search results for the RSS feeds showed the articles’ headlines/summaries, but other information was only available after clicking through to the full articles. An overview of date, time, author and summary would have been more useful and informative. The website searches gave headline/summary, byline and date. |
There was a great deal of archived content that came up through the RSS feeds that dated back nearly a year. |
The RSS feeds were consistent in what they pulled from the website. When 10-12 consecutive searches were run through the feeds, the results remained the same. |
